LONDON (UK) – In the wake of the government advising against all non-essential travel to Balearic and Canary islands of Spain because of the assessment of COVID-19 risks in that country, TUI UK announced on Wednesday it cancelled holidays to the Spanish island destinations until Aug. 4.
On Saturday, the government said all those who return from Spain would be required to undergo 14-day quarantine given the spurt in the number of coronavirus cases there.
TUI UK has put on hold all holidays to mainland Spain until Aug. 10. It has criticised the government policy which includes the whole of Spain, where infections have been reported in certain areas.
“We… call upon the UK Government to work closely with the travel industry and remove the ‘blunt tool’ approach to quarantine and consider the rapid introduction of regional Travel Corridors,” said Andrew Flintham, Managing Director of TUI UK and Ireland.
“The level of uncertainty and confusion created this week is damaging for business and customer confidence in travel.”
He said that as per customer feedback, Britons still wanted to travel overseas for summer holidays and the firm had added seven new services to places in Turkey and Greece.
