Protective masks to be made mandatory outdoors in Romania

BUCHAREST (ROMANIA) – In its move to introduce new measures to contain an increase in coronavirus cases, Romania’s government has called for shortening working hours for outdoor pubs and restaurants and making protective masks outside mandatory, according to officials.

A government emergency committee said it would urge authorities to approve closing down outdoors bars by 2300 local time.

The number of coronavirus infections in Romania went beyond 1,000 new cases each day in the last week, thereby taking confirmed cases to 47,053.

Masks are already mandatory in public transport and indoor public spaces, but people complying to the same has been relatively low, officials said.

Health Minister Nelu Tataru said on Tuesday the number of new cases should come down within two to three weeks if the rules are properly followed.

A legislative void that had at least thousands of infected people not getting treated at all for most of July was responsible for this month’s increase. The void has been solved through a new parliamentary bill.

Earlier this week, prosecutors investigated into a man who travelled to the Black Sea coast despite coming from a village which had implemented quarantine.
