Treasury pledges additional funds for Scotland, N. Ireland and Wales

LONDON (UK) – Westminster on Friday pledged an additional fund of 3.7 billion pounds for the devolved governments of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to plan the coronavirus response.

The three nations, which are semi-autonomous, get some funding based on how much is spent by England. But the final amounts cannot be guaranteed in advance and that creates uncertainty over how much can be spent.

In a bid to address this issue, the Treasury has pledged that the three nations will receive at least 3.7 billion pounds as additional funds this year.

The announcement of additional funding is a bid to ease growing tensions between England the three nations, especially Scotland where public support for independence has been stoked by dispute over the response to coronavirus.

On Thursday, Prime Minister Boris Johnson paid a visit to Scotland to boost ties with Westminster.
