Foreign states may have carried out cyber attacks on facilities, says Iran

TEHERAN (IRAN) – Foreign governments must have been behind the cyberattacks on Iranian facilities said the foreign ministry on Thursday. The ministry also played down the possibility of outside states having a role to play in a series of blasts and fire outbreaks in military and other installations.

Several incidents of fire and explosions have been reported at military, industrial and nuclear sites, oil refineries, power plants, factories and businesses across the country since June.

Some Iranian officials believe that the fire outbreak at the underground Natanz nuclear facility this month could be the result of a cyber sabotage.

“There are thousands of cyberattacks on the country’s infrastructure on a daily basis – which is nothing new – most of which are repelled by our defence systems,” state media quoted Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi as saying.

He said that fires in refineries and forests were common during the summer.
