Kuwait’s emir undergoes successful surgery, says KUNA

KUWAIT CITY (KUWAIT) – The office of Emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah said the ruler underwent a successful surgery on Sunday morning after being hospitalised on Saturday.

Sheikh Sabah has been in office since 2006. The state news agency KUNA did not mention what kind of surgery he underwent.

His designated successor Crown Prince Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmed al-Sabah assumed charge of some of the ruler’s constitutional duties on Saturday temporarily.

While on an official visit to the US last year, Sheikh Sabah was admitted to hospital after suffering what his office said was a health setback in Kuwait in August. He returned to his home country in October.

Following the announcement of the ruler’s hospitalisation, Kuwait’s central bank governor came out with a statement on Saturday, stressing the strength and stability of the dinar.

The government has been trying to buttress its finances which have been slammed by the low oil prices and the novel coronavirus pandemic.
