PM Boris Johnson advised citizens to stay at home this summer and enjoy a staycation in the “superlative” rather than going abroad. “I think this is a great great year for people to have a staycation – this country is uniquely blessed with fantastic places for holidays,” Johnson said in a press briefing. “I am certainly going to be doing that.”

The relationship with China must be honest if it has to survive, said justice minister Robert Buckland. He was replying to a question about Hong Kong, Huawei and the future of Chinese investment in the country’s infrastructure.

The National Grid said it had begun the construction of Viking Link, an electricity interconnector between Britain and Denmark. Viking Link is a joint venture between National Grid Ventures, part of National Grid, and the Danish electricity system owner and operator, Energinet.

A fire broke out aboard a US warship docked at San Diego Naval Base and the flames raged for hours. As many as 21 people were hospitalised with minor injuries and two vessels nearby had to be relocated.

Polish incumbent Andrzej Duda has won the presidential election. Results from over 99% of polling stations are in his favour with the remaining uncounted votes unlikely to alter the outcome, said the National Electoral Commission. 

In the wake of US penalising senior Chinese officials over the treatment of Uighur Muslims in Xinjiang, Beijing announced “corresponding sanctions” against Washington. China’s bid to impose sanctions comes as ties between the two countries have slumped over the coronavirus pandemic, trade, Huawei and a national security law imposed on Hong Kong.
