MOSCOW (RUSSIA) – The Russian far eastern city of Khabarovsk witnessed a protest march on Saturday in which thousands took to the streets protesting against the detention of its regional governor. He has been charged with orchestrating the murder of several entrepreneurs 15 years ago.
A member of the Liberal Democratic Party, Sergei Furgal was a popular governor of the region. He came to power in 2018 after defeating his rival belonging to the United Russia party that supports President Vladimir Putin.
On Thursday, Furgal was detained and taken to Moscow.
If found guilty, he could face life imprisonment. Furgal has denied the charges.
Video clips from website DVHAB showed supporters chanting “Furgal is our choice”, “Freedom” and marching with posters “I am/We are Sergei Furgal.”
“Get out of here, Moscow,” a female protester said in another video.
