WASHINGTON (US) – The latest US coronavirus hotspot to roll back its reopening is Florida’s greater Miami where restaurant dining was ordered to be closed on Monday. This comes as the number of coronavirus cases is surging across the nation and the death toll climbing to 130,000.
After hospitalisations witnessed a 50% jump in California, restaurants were told to withdraw dine-in provisions. The state capitol building in Sacramento was temporarily closed.
Texas recorded an all-time high in the number of people hospitalised for the eight consecutive day.
According to the US military, a special 50-member medical team, which includes an emergency room, critical-care nurses and respiratory specialists, will be deployed to a hard-hit area in and around San Antonio.
As many as two dozen states, including California, Texas and Florida, are reporting high infection rates.
“It’s a serious situation that we have to address immediately,” said Dr Anthony Fauci, the country’s top infectious disease specialist and member of the White House coronavirus task force.
Closure of restaurant in Miami was ordered by Mayor Carlos Gimenez as there are close to 48,000 COVID-19 infections to date among its 2.8 million population.
According to an official statement, outdoor dining would be allowed and no more than four patrons can sit at a table. Music can be played at a level that does not require anyone to shout to be heard so that the emission of dangerous airborne droplets can be prevented.
