DUBAI (MIDDLE EAST) – The United Arab Emirates announced a reshaping of the government on Sunday, by bringing together government entities and appointing new economy and industry ministers. It has decided upon giving it a year to achieve the new targets.
The head of Abu Dhabi’s national oil company ADNOC, Sultan al-Jaber, was declared as industry and advanced technology minister, while Abdullah al-Marri was appointed economy minister, announced by UAE Vice President Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum on his official Twitter account.
The energy and infrastructure ministries were coalesced under a single portfolio to be led by the current energy minister, Suhail Al Mazrouei.
A source familiar with the matter divulged that ADNOC chief executive post with al-Jaber would be retained.
Sheikh Mohammed had said last month when plans to restructure were first announced that the changes are being made to help the country cope with the impact that coronavirus pandemic has had on them.
The changes that would be brought in include abolishing half of government service centers and transforming them into digital platforms within two years. Around half of federal agencies would be merged with each other or within ministries.
Sheikh Mohammed, also the ruler of Dubai emirate, said the changes would hasten decision making, thereby making the government more responsive to change.
