UK epidemic is slowing and antibody test could soon be ready

LONDON (UK) – The United Kingdom coronavirus epidemic is showing signs of slowing down and the antibody tests shall be ready in days, according to Neil Ferguson, a professor of mathematical biology at Imperial College London.

“We think the epidemic is just about slowing in the UK right now.”

The government’s chief scientific adviser Patrick Vallance said that putting the country on lockdown a week ago showed signs of slowing virus transmission and that UK was no longer in a “fast acceleration” phase.

Vallance said that the restrictions were already showing a “big effect” on the virus’ transmission.

This would lead to fewer people being admitted and ultimately reduce the total fatality figure. Hospital admissions stabilised already to about 1,000 per day.

It would take 2 to 3 weeks to determine the slowdown’s extent in the virus’ spread because of the lag between transmission rate and hospital admissions.
