GENEVA – On Monday, South Korean foreign minister Kang Kyung-wha called for a quick resumption of the U.S.-North Korean nuclear talks which have been stalled.

Kang Kyung-wha also added that the South Korean government was ready to engage with North Korea to facilitate dialogue on the matter.

On addressing the U.N.-sponsored Conference on Disarmament, Kang Kyung-wha highlighted that the goal was to achieve the complete denuclearisation of the divided Korean peninsula.

“A speedy resumption of the U.S.-DPRK negotiations is critical so that all stakeholders maintain and build upon the hard-won momentum for dialogue. We stand ready to engage with the North in a way that facilitates and accelerates the U.S.-DPRK dialogue.”

South Korea promoted projects with the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, using the isolated country’s formal name.

North Korea has been subjected to sanctions from the United Nations since 2006 which have been strengthened by the Security Council over the years to cut off Pyongyang’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs’ funding.

North Korea has, however, continued to enhance its nuclear and ballistic missile programs in breach of the sanctions.

North Korea told the Geneva talks that as the U.S. had ignored its year-end nuclear talk deadline, it no longer felt bound by commitments.

There was no immediate reaction from both delegations on Monday as the meeting continued.
