WELLINGTON- On Monday, New Zealand authorities prepared to airlift a busload of tourists stranded in the remote Milford Sound area as torrential rains cut access to the popular crowd-favourite destination.

A state of emergency was declared and 382 people were trapped in Fiordland including visitors and a lodge and tourist boat’s staff.

Those trapped in the area have plenty of food and are warm and safe. It’s likely that they may have to stay for a minimum of a day in Milford Sound due to the heavy rain and severe flooding from the last 24 hours.

Authorities are looking to airlift a busload of 27 tourists trapped in an area of a severely flooded region- as road services to the area are expected to be closed all week.

A few tourists have already been flown to safety by helicopter.
